What's In My Head
To begin with, I should probably start to give my fine readers an idea of what I like. If you want, you can get a quick, vague idea by clicking on that profile link on the right side of the page, toward the top. It has a listing of some of my favorite books, movies and music. But let's go ahead and get more specific.
At this very moment, I am listening to one of the two brand new Bright Eyes CDs, which is called I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning. The other new Bright Eyes CD, Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. Both CDs are being released into stores on January 25th, but I preordered them directly from Saddle Creek's website, so I received mine early. I think it's because I'm special. And I gave them money.
Let me just say that pretty much everything released by Saddle Creek is worth your attention. They are a label based in Omaha, Nebraska. Apparently, Omaha is some kind of breeding ground for musical genius because some of the label's best bands--such as Bright Eyes, Cursive and The Faint--hail from the city. There are non-Omaha bands on the label as well, though, and they also are quite good.
Another Saddle Creek artist that I've been listening to recently is Desaparecidos. This is a band headed by Conor Oberst, who actually is the driving force behind Bright Eyes, as well. The key difference is that Desaparecidos leans much more rock than Bright Eyes. It's brilliant stuff, especially if you have strong reservations about capitalism. I'm just saying--it's the main theme of the album.
I've also been listening to The Shins quite a bit lately--both Oh, Inverted World and Chutes Too Narrow--which I discovered thanks to the movie Garden State. Which brings me to current movies, first and foremost being Garden State. It is brilliant, it is wonderful and I'm obsessed. It is written and directed by Zach Braff, who stars in the magnificent sitcom Scrubs. He also stars in the movie, alongside Natalie Portman. Natalie Portman, if you are not aware, is a magnificent goddess. And I'm in love with her. There are connections here, people, that you will have to learn how to follow.
I'll be talking more about Garden State in a future post.
Other movies that I've seen recently include Changing Lanes, Rushmore, Mean Girls and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. I probably won't be writing about Changing Lanes but there will most definitely be some eventually discussion of Wes Anderson and his movies. Oh, and I suspect I'll have something to say about Lindsay Lohan. I'm eclectic that way.
Recent books? Well, I'm currently reading Don Delillo's White Noise. Before that, I read After Silence by Jonathan Carroll, who is a small god. There will most definitely be some discussion of Jonathan Carroll and his works. If you don't know who he is--and I bet you don't--then get cracking and read something of his. Then read everything else he has written. Then curse the fact that many of his books are very hard to find here in the United States.
If you live in the UK, stop cursing and go buy more of his books.
Finally, the television shows that are currently airing that I watch are Lost, Alias, The Daily Show, Scrubs, Arrested Development and Will and Grace. What can I say? I have a thing for Debra Messing.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is easily my favorite show of all time. You should strongly consider making it yours, as well.
So there. Perhaps you better understand my tastes now. More likely, you're just confused. But don't worry because I'm willing to explain most of this. However, I can only do that if you stick around and keep reading. So do yourself and me a favor, bookmark this page and return regularly.
Also, leave some comments now and then. You know you want to and it will keep me more interested.
