In The Beginning
So here's the deal. My name is Joel Caris and I ran a blog called Nightmares For Sale for much of 2004. I suppose I still run it, but I haven't been posting much at all. At this point, I consider it largely dead, though I don't rule out the possibility of posting on it again at some point.
Nightmares For Sale was largely focused on politics and society. I wanted to talk about the realities of our world and I had fun doing it. However, I no longer want to do that. Politics, society and culture still interest me greatly, but I simply have little interest in doing what I used to do on that blog and there are many blogs that do what I attempted to do much better. There's little point to that blog these days.
And yet, I like the idea of blogging. I want to continue, even with my short attention span. Thus, I have birthed this blog, The Between. The focus is on art--particularly on books, movies, television shows and music. The plan is to write about these from a personal perspective. What I figure on doing is writing what are reviews in one sense and personal stories in another sense. I want to talk about art that I love and why I love it. I don't want to be technical--though I may get technical at times--and I don't want to create proper reviews, per se. I want simply to write about certain works of art and how they affected me. I think this will be more enjoyable than what I attempted to do with Nightmares For Sale.
The beauty of this is that I can still incorporate thoughts on society, but it will be in a more intriguing context. I can even talk politics from time to time, if I want, except that the thoughts would stem from a work of art. This blog will be personal, but I hope that it will also serve to expose readers to new artistic experiences.
So what kind of books, movies, television and music will I be writing about? I expect it will be a wide variety. There will certainly be posts about newly released material, but the majority of the posts will likely be mining older works (though still modern). There are quite a lot of works that have really dug themselves into my brain that I wouldn't mind writing about.
I will talk about both mainstream and obscure, as I enjoy both. I will attempt to write in an entertaining way. As I said, the posts will be personal. But the intent is that they will also be fun and intriguing. That can be a tricky line to walk and I hope I am successful.
So there's the introduction. Now we will begin.
